Porn is American Culture.
American culture during the past hot vax era has made them feel sexually adventurous, leading them to consume new forms of adult content. Adult entertainment is now an industry worth over $97 billion with numerous legal and logistical challenges:
Nebraska sociologist Kelsy Burke examines this phenomenon in her new book “American Pornography”, and will present on it at a public colloquium on April 28 in Lincoln.
Women Enjoy Doing It
Pornography is an industry with great financial rewards and many women enjoy working within it. While performing can bring great pride, and seeing their work reach audiences all around the globe can bring great satisfaction. But for others who do not see pornography as their career choice it can feel exploitative; women working within it rarely speak out about their experiences due to fear of blacklisting from future projects and discrimination by other industries; this lack of transparency prevents average consumers from accurately judging it as an industry.
At some point in their lives, most Americans admit to viewing pornographic material – whether on movies, DVDs or the Internet. Since the invention of VCR 25 years ago, adult entertainment has seen exponential growth.
Men are four times more likely than women to view pornography. Regular viewing can cause men to become less tolerant of monogamy in primary relationships and may lead to extramarital sexual activity. Addicts who find themselves stuck can get help through Sex Addicts Anonymous – a 12-step program offering meetings both locally as well as via Internet chat and telephone conference calls.
They Want To Be Attractive
Pornography has been around for more than 100 years. But its popularity in America surged during the 1990s with the Internet enabling easy production and distribution. Middle-class Americans could participate, fueling millions in profits that have created many new businesses. Homemade porn is very popular today, pornography generates billions in profits every year; its profits fueling innovation across industries.
This industry boasts all the hallmarks of legitimacy: trade publications, conventions and legal seminars are regularly hosted within it, along with major studios and stars like Jenna Jameson – former beauty queen turned showgirl/porn actress who earned over one million dollars last year by performing oral sex for money – along with its own trade publications, conventions and seminars.
But despite its profitability, the pornography industry still faces several serious obstacles. Under President George W. Bush’s administration, efforts have increased significantly against purveyors such as skin trader Larry Flynt and Seymore Butts; this dramatic shift suggests the federal government has become more interested in defining which sex acts constitute illegality than ever before. As this film explores.
As FRONTLINE notes, this is an especially sensitive period for pornography; one study found that states with less access experienced an increase of 53% in rapes while those with the most access saw a 27% decline. FRONTLINE explores American pornography’s changing face.
They Want To Be Sexy
Pornography has become an entrenched force in American culture, touching upon issues as diverse as censorship, Internet regulation, morality, gender roles, marriage and divorce as well as sexually explicit media.
Many adult industry insiders see no harm in pornography, which they see as an honest form of entertainment and information. Others worry that its current surge is creating serious issues; one such as Larry Flynt is even lobbying hard for change to federal obscenity laws.
FRONTLINE’s documentary series “American Porn” examines the forces driving this surge of sexually explicit material, speaking with producers and directors as well as federal prosecutors and anti-porn activists about it. Furthermore, FRONTLINE takes an in-depth look at its business including conventions and trade publications as well as marketing initiatives promoting it.
Pornography has experienced unprecedented growth due to the Internet, making its content available to millions more people than ever before. Profits for most porn companies have doubled in just five years alone. From Hustler Hollywood store profits doubling annually to dot-com millionaire Danni’s Hard Drive’s dot-com millionaire investors’ fortunes rising rapidly over time – FRONTLINE takes an in-depth look at some of today’s major pornography operations such as Clive McClean’s studio and then finally Danni’s Live Strippers which grossed $8 Million last year alone!
They Want To Have Fun
Pornography is an immensely lucrative industry. From toys sold at corner drugstores to the cinematic adaptation of “50 Shades of Grey,” sexually explicit material has become part of American culture in an unprecedented manner. Yet many in the porn industry remain wary about potential crackdown by President George Bush’s administration, leading FRONTLINE into this field and interviewing industry leaders such as porn pioneer Larry Flynt or Danni Ashe, owner of an influential web site and chain of sex emporiums (such as Hustler Hollywood), how they keep their businesses profitable.
FRONTLINE interviews performers who target women as their audience, yet find their work physically demanding and emotionally stressful, often leading many who enter this industry to quit quickly after just a short while. Taboo porn is rising in popularity especially in the amateur scene! Shimiken, one of the top performers, shoots videos or does shows for eight or 9 hours per day, seven days per week!
This film also explores the fierce competition that exists between companies producing pornographic movies and those who distribute them to audiences. As this business becomes more sophisticated, consumer demand may not be sufficient to offset any government crackdowns.
